Very cool. I don't know that I am ever going down the path of direct conflict as a means to replace the flock (though one of my players really wants his own Book of Binding), but I have made Oathbound a place where a lot of my campaigns at epic go and as presented (I know they are avatar forms) the Flock was a bit less than boot-shake-inducing.

The flock aren't necessarily meant to be killed. They take the place of the gods in the Forge, though they are more something like a force of nature, and should pose a challenge to a full party of epic level adventurers. One of Jim's rules early on was that we weren't supposed to kill off the flock because then we wouldn't have a world to document. I think the Pathfinder stats for Colopitiron came out cleaner than the earlier ones and will show just what a bad ass he is.

SPOILER NOTICE!
That being said, we've included something of an out in the Unhowdes. These are a set of seven artifacts, one corresponding to each flock member. These are the personal weapons of the flock from the before time, each one forged from half of the wielder's soul. They are intended to make defeating the corresponding member considerably easier (see Annoxus' story in the original book). We won't be publishing a product (at least not for a long time) in which the flock are destroyed, but for DM's who want to have their parties take on a flock member, a campaign could be written around getting one's hands on one of the Unhowdes. However, if a party member did take over for a feathered fowl, that would likely be the end of the game unless the DM was exceptionally innovative. A better option would be to have the citadel crumble and have the lock open, and the party would then have to deal with the consequences of a land suddenly without its warden.

That's really cool! Seems a definite update of her look, I've always kind of wondered since a lot pictures present her so completely armored, is that an Armor Golem she is wearing of just a bad-ass suit of plate? I think I like the red over her old more silvery look. But then I have also always seen her plucking new weapons and gear from people she Sifts and then rushing out to try their quality, often anointing them with fresh blood above her crimson sands. Artistically, I imagine the new look would be a lot of red on red when presented against the sands but I also think it could be used to do some great imagery, as if the desert had given birth to a bloody angel. Thanks for the inspiration.

Barbello is one of the most dangerous of them she delights in battle tough may easily lose entrust in those that do not offer a challenge taking a limb and leaving them to suffer.

some of the other flock may test with words rather than combat and the lord of Eclipse has open parties where he freely mingles among the lessor folk

by the way there is a new painting of Barbello already done you cannot see it here but it is on my website under "things" and titled "angle of war". www,toddmorasch.com let me know what you think

The possibility of direct attention is definitely something we've talked about. I have enough friends that game with me that our group has divided a few times, and of the nights we play and people that DM, two of us use the Forge in our games fairly heavily. We both talk about how that if a party moves to openly to become a known threat the Flock pretty much HAVE to address it and its not going to go well for the players.

I really like the idea of a one-on-one call out. I have considered doing it with Barbello, because it seems likely in any long term Arena stint. But the idea of using someone else more civil or mysterious is growing on me.

my personal answer is very powerful and extremely smart and dangerous. i love to throw my players up against things that are not balanced. sometimes its great to have them fight some cock jerk who they can kick the tare out of, or a horde of cronies they can turn into a blood bath. it is important as a DM to remember we are not there to compete with are players, but show them a good time, letting them live a power fantasy is great and is what is missing from online games which give no rewards for fighting lower level beings.

on the other hand i also will throw very powerful and dangerous things in the path of my players with no consideration to how they might survive. this is great to because it forces players to think on there feet and be innovative. greg has been a player in all my games for the last 15 years and never fails to do the unexpected in the most dangerous moments creating some of my favorite gaming memories.

Were the four horned feathered foul are concerned remember why they are there if they come up against one of your crew or a whole group and they are kicking butt they may fight to subdue and leave them alive to grow stronger , they might even say "i will be back for you, in time when your skill matches your will." this kind of trashing can give a group motivation to become more skilled.

in turn one of the flock may disable the group and choose a one on one battle with the strongest. they may even kill one of those who shows they can harm one of the flock, but rarely out of rage and more do to there requirements. the death of a character if done right can add great dramatic weight to a game and even give the person who dies a moment that will be talked about for years to come, never let a death be a throw away as a dm always milk that for all the drama a tv show or movie would.

hope that helps some
edited by ToddM on 6/10/2010

This subject has always caused debate among the Oatbound fans I run across. Since the Flock's ultimate goal (I am being a little vague here on purpose) can bring PCs into direct conflict with them, how strong should they be? I suspect that (wisely) this has been left a little open to interpretation. It is however likely in a lot of long term Oathbound campaigns. I mostly ask because in the 3.0 books, the presentations of the "avatar" selves of the flock seemed a little on the soft side of their CRs. I am very interested to see how, if at all, this was addressed in Oathbound Seven. I'd love to here how other folks are dealing with this?
