Just out of curiosity, is there any chance if spoilers about how the PFRPG version of this will be handled? We have been going with the earlier experience point progressions (which seemed a little on par with non-slotted magic items) and have not really used the version presented in Wildwood because of the way it seemed to interact (detrimentally) with Prestige Classes. I'd also be curious to see a master list of available Prestige Races with a current adaptation... but I won't pressure, much.

Tom updated (greatly improved) the Wildwood method with the Oathbound Player's Guide, which we are using to help put together Oathbound Seven. He really wants this method to be used, while I still prefer the original. I have been mulling including both methods and letting people choose which they prefer. However, in doing some of the mechanics for Eclipse, we found a new method that is simpler. Essentially assigning an xp penalty to leveling, and then gaining the evolution on level up. We are going to try some testing with this and see if that ends up working out for the better.

From a design stand point the original xp version or this new xp penalty makes a lot of sense since in a lot of ways the Evolutions are like Magic items that can't be taken away. So non-slotted (usually about 2x base item price) and then the standard SRD value of XP = 1/25 gp value, value out the effects via item creation rules and you are close to the mark. The abilities to keep the item are almost offset by the penalty of not being able to sell or reallocate the effect. The prestige class model really hurts peoples ability to specialize other aspects of their characters and when I proffered it as the new way of things, not one player in seven ever considered taking a level in it over their other options.

Yeah, I had no hand in the Wildwood method, but in my opinion, it kind of killed the whole concept. The idea was to add additional power to players between 1 and 20. It took a little longer to reach 20, but by the time you got there, you had something extra. Turning it into a level basically meant you had to give something else up in order to take it, so by the time you reached 20, you were at best on par with a non Oathbound character, and at worst, considerably weaker.
We definitely won't be using that method. The new method will be an option to either use the original method, or to purchase a template that essentially levels with your character. The goal is still to offer something extra, not just an option.

I mentioned it to one of my groups tonight and hands down they were far more ok with prestige race/evolutions as Exp costs or penalties. Thanks for listening, I am so excited for Oathbound Seven... !!

I like the original, Player's Guide and Eclipse versions. Are there going to be any suggestions on how to price the new PrRs?

Well, the whole evolution thing turned out to be the best part of the book. There are 30 different foci, and each has both depth (multiple levels) and breadth (optional customizations). Prices are listed with each step, not suggested. Of course, you can change the prices if you want. Prices can also probably be scaled if you are using the Pathfinder alternate leveling methods.

In DoF (p 146) the Grinder has the focus of the Grinder. What bonuses does it provide and will we be seeing more individual specific evolutions?

Hmm, that goes way back. Well, I looked it up and I jogged some memories. Basically that was a trick we used to allow us to build unique creatures with powers not explainable by the ordinary rules. For example, the grinder has Regeneration 10. That's not a function of race or class, but something we added on to make her more challenging. Basically I statted out the creature as is, thought of a bunch of cool powers we could add, and then tacked on "Focus of the Grinder" to explain it all. I don't actually know what all the focus did in this case (that was 10 years ago), but you could probably reverse-engineer the thing and figure out which bits don't belong.
One thing that this was also intended to inspire was the realization that evolutions are organic things, and you can totally "Roll your own" with DM permission. Figure out the powers you want and what they might cost, and then talk to the DM about getting approval. You can really get whatever powers you want, although we greatly discourage using evloutions to get spell-like abilities -- those don't really seem like genetic enhancements (though you could arguably take the "Focus of the drow" or something like that). Evolutions should be more physical or mental. If you can find a monster or a race with a particular power, you can probably evolve towards it.
